  • The international race for the technology of the future
  • Geist Heidelberg, Lecture

“Without quantum physics, there would be no transistors and no lasers. There would be no mobile phones, no internet, no Facebook,” says Tommaso Calarco about the science that could be fundamental to future technologies.

He is not alone in being convinced that we are on the threshold of a second quantum revolution. The European Commission is providing €1 billion in funding for the ten-year EU Quantum Flagship Consortium initiated by Calarco and involving more than 5,000 scientists. The foundation stone for this was laid by Calarco’s Quantum Manifesto, signed by 3,600 scientists. And the German government is currently awarding 2 billion euros for the “Quantum Computer Made in Germany” mission.
In addition to companies such as Google and IBM, countries such as the USA, China, Canada, Japan and others have long been involved in the race for the technology of the future. But who will win the race?

Prof. Dr. Tommaso Calarco heads the Institute for Quantum Control at the Peter Grünberg Institute in Jülich and is one of the most influential representatives of his field.
