When 19-year-old Tina Rutherford disappears, it’s clear to everyone in Chabot, Mississippi who is responsible. Twenty-five years earlier, young Cindy Walker disappeared without a trace after a date with a neighbor’s son, Larry Ott.
Due to lack of evidence, Larry was not convicted, living in ritualized solitude ever since. Once again under suspicion, his house is increasingly the target of drunken rednecks; he is shot and young black constable Silas Jones is put in charge of the investigation – a shared past and a dark secret link him to Larry.

Tom Franklin was born in Dickinson, Alabama in 1963. In 2011, he made the New York Times bestseller list with Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter.
