Fewer and fewer young people having to pay for more and more old people, an ever-widening gap between rich and poor: the social system as we know it is at its end. It can’t be reformed, says Hamburg economist Thomas Straubhaar. But it can be revolutionized: through an unconditional basic income. This is the European answer to successfully prevail against American dominance and Chinese claims to power with a culture of measure and center, compromise and balance, participation and co-determination.

Thomas Straubhaar has been a professor of economics, especially international economic relations, at the University of Hamburg since 1999. At the same time, he is director of the Europa-Kolleg Hamburg. Since September 2013, he has been a fellow of the Transatlantic Academy in Washington DC.
