Thomas Coehler

  • Insanely famous?
  • How celebrity and psychopathology go together
  • Lecture

People often talk about “genius and madness”, but how are pathology and person really connected? Does the disorder make the person or the person make the disorder? Were Vincent van Gogh and Joan of Arc really schizophrenics? Is the work of Ernest Hemingway a result of his affective disorder? And to what extent did mental illness set the course for the lives of many famous people?

The mathematician, physician and psychologist Thomas Köhler is an associate professor at the University of Hamburg. In his lecture he combines analysis, insight and anecdote. He focuses on the teachings of Sigmund Freud, psychopathology and the interaction of intoxicants on the psyche.
