Think & Drink

  • Not fit for this world?
  • Max von Sponeck
  • Social Activity

The world recently gazed in amazement at the picture of some men in California who appeared to be calmly playing golf while the world was on fire right behind them. But this behavior is by no means due to indifference, as scientists explain. In the face of major disasters, people like to seek out familiar territory and carry on doing what they are doing, because this allows them to maintain the illusion of normality. Psychologists call this phenomenon normalcy bias: we don’t recognizewhat we don’t know. But this mechanism is dangerous – for example, when we as humanity fail to see where progressive climate change is leading us.

In this series, topics that are currently of particular concern to our society will be highlighted in a relaxed atmosphere. Based on a current text, we will discuss these issues and look to philosophy for inspiration and perhaps even answers.

Dr. Max von Sponeck is a lecturer at the Department of Philosophy at the University of Heidelberg and at the Heidelberg University of Education. He specializes in the contemporary philosophy of mind.
