  • Loss
  • Max von Sponeck

In a world of disintegrating orders and melting polar ice caps, in which decades of peace are being replaced by new wars and machines are increasingly replacing people, the experience of loss is becoming a fundamental mood. This benefits populists, among others, who sociologist Andreas Reckwitz calls the “administrators of loss”. For Reckwitz, the crisis phenomena in Western societies are part of a modern dynamic of loss since the 18th century, which is the flipside of the Western belief in progress. One of the existential questions of the 21st century is therefore: can societies remain modern and at the same time deal productively with loss?

In this series, topics that are currently of particular concern to our society will be examined in a relaxed atmosphere. Based on a current text, we will discuss these issues and look to philosophy for inspiration and perhaps even answers.

Dr. Max von Sponeck is a lecturer at the Department of Philosophy at the University of Heidelberg and at the Heidelberg University of Education. He specializes in the contemporary philosophy of mind.
