Heidelberg established a sister city relationship with Simferopol in Crimea 35 years ago. However, since 2014, the peninsula has been occupied by Russia, and the Crimean Tatars have been systematically persecuted. For this reason, the event brings voices and up-to-date information from Crimea and about the Crimean Tatars to Heidelberg—in part to take a stand against Russian propaganda and disinformation regarding Crimea.
The newly published book *The Crimean Tatars: History, Culture, Politics* and excerpts from a documentary series about Crimean Tatar traces in Germany will be presented. Irena Brežná, a multi-award-winning journalist and writer, will read from her 1993 report on the return of the Crimean Tatars to Crimea. Crimean Tatar author and activist Elnara Nuriieva-Letova will moderate the evening and present her work, as well as that of the two editors of the book “The Crimean Tatars,” Dr. Mieste-Hotopp-Riecke, director of ICATAT and an expert on the Crimean Tatars, and Sarah Reinke, who will shed light on the human rights situation in Crimea.
