The balcony

  • Crimes committed by the Wehrmacht in Greece
  • The destruction of the village of Lyngiádes on 3 October 1943
  • Film, In dialogue

Lyngiádes, a village in northern Greece, is called the “balcony” because of its wonderful views. But the idyll was the scene of a massacre that is still hardly known in this country. On October 3, 1943, the German occupying forces murdered eighty-two villagers, mostly children and old people, and destroyed almost all their houses. In the film, those born after the massacre hear the memories of survivors, often for the first time. They are moving documents of grief against the background of a collective trauma and insights into the failure to come to terms with the past in Germany and the refusal to make amends.

Director Chrysanthos Konstantinidis himself comes from Lyngiádes and will lead through the film after the screening together with legal historian Christoph Schminck-Gustavus and Prof. Hilde Schramm. Schminck-Gustavus researched the background of the crime three decades ago and published it in his book Feuerrauch. The film screening on this 77th anniversary of the massacre is organized by the DAI in cooperation with the campaign “Kriegsschuld und Verpflichtungen” and the association Respekt für Griechenland e.V.
