Saba-Nur Cheema & Meron Mendel

  • The Outrage Trap
  • How We Can Learn to Argue Again
  • In dialogue

We should not shy away from debate, for it is the driving force of democracy. Yet today’s constant state of agitation is a trap of outrage: Instead of engaging in objective dialogue, rigid camps and ideological echo chambers are forming, which increasingly hinder public discourse. For years, Saba-Nur Cheema and Meron Mendel have been bringing together people with fundamentally different views. They foster a debate that they know intimately, in part because of their own diverse backgrounds. This evening, they will discuss what resilient debate looks like and how we can cultivate it.

Prof. Dr. Meron Mendel studied education and Jewish history in Haifa and Munich and earned his doctorate in Frankfurt. He is a professor of social work and director of the Anne Frank Educational Center.

Dr. Saba-Nur Cheema is a political scientist and anti-racism trainer who advises the German federal government, among others, on issues of Islamophobia.
