The promise of the rule of law is that all people are equal before the law – but this is not so. The law in this country favors those who are wealthy; it disadvantages those who have little or nothing. Proceedings for economic crimes amounting to millions of dollars end with minimal sentences or are dropped. Trials against people who steal a loaf of bread or repeatedly drive on the black economy end harshly and ever more harshly. Lawyer Ronen Steinke visited prisons, researched prosecutors, judges, lawyers and convicts to investigate systematic injustice in the penal system.

Dr. Ronen Steinke is a lawyer, editor and author for the Süddeutsche Zeitung.
