Hans-Peter Gruber

  • Out of the ordinary
  • A political biography of Felix Weil - co-founder of the Institute for Social Research
  • Literature

The Frankfurt Institute for Social Research became known worldwide for its critical theory. In contrast, Felix Weil, who founded this platform for scientific Marxism in 1923 with his million-dollar inheritance, received little attention. In his publication Aus der Art geschlagen (2022), Hans-Peter Gruber sheds light on Weil’s groundbreaking conceptual and organizational achievements, especially in the founding and early phase of the institute, based on a broad range of sources. The biography shows the multi-layered traces of his multifaceted and cosmopolitan life, which repeatedly took him away from his life’s work, the Institute, and brought him back together again. Alongside many milestones of the 20th century, Weil’s Jewish origins become visible as a formative factor.

Dr. Hans-Peter Gruber is a research associate at the Heidelberg Central Archive for Research into the History of Jews in Germany.
