Musical Sunday

  • Maurice Ravel: Pavane - La Valse - Boléro
  • Marcus Imbsweiler & Timo Jouko Herrmann
  • Literature

Three orchestral works associated with dance from the pen of Maurice Ravel are the focus of this event. The enigmatic Pavane pour une infante défunte, initially composed for piano, dates back to Ravel’s student days; it stands in stark contrast to the “Poème choréographiqueLa Valse, composed under the impression of the First World War, in which the waltzing old world gradually descends into chaos. And of course the famous Boléro, which Ravel himself described with dry humor as an “orchestral piece without music”, should not be missing from this series.

Two music enthusiasts will dive deep into the respective works with the audience: Marcus Imbsweiler is a writer and musicologist; Timo Jouko Herrmann composes, plays the violin and is guest conductor of the Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra. They published the conversations of the first twenty Musical Sundays in their joint book Beziehungszauber. Classical masterpieces under the magnifying glass (2024).
