Kamel Daoud

The novel *Huris* falls under an Algerian law that prohibits publications about the civil war. Kamel Daoud was therefore sentenced in absentia to three years in prison without parole and a hefty fine.
About the novel: Algeria, the 1990s, civil war, a raid on a village. Islamists try to slit young Aube’s throat, but only her vocal cords are severed. She can do nothing but remain silent. This is also due to state laws that prohibit remembering the civil war. She can speak only to her unborn daughter. But the secret pregnancy confronts her with new questions.

Kamel Daoud, born in Algeria in 1970, worked as a journalist. After receiving threats in Algeria for his critical articles, he went into exile in France in 2014 and devoted himself to literature. His first novel , *The Meursault Investigation: A Counter-Narrative*, was widely acclaimed, and Daoud has received numerous awards.
