  • Mathematics for eyes, hands and ears
  • Geist Heidelberg, Lecture

Mathematics is abstract and incomprehensible – it doesn’t have to be that way! It is often possible to make mathematical phenomena accessible to the senses, in the truest sense of the word, through clever visualization. Mathematical models have taken on a new and central significance through the use of digitized visualization media. Abstract concepts can now be made accessible to the senses and thus the mathematics behind many phenomena (from everyday life, technology and science) can be illustrated. Mathematician Jürgen Richter-Gebert gives examples from hands-on exhibitions, app projects and hands-on workshops from the last 20 years, touching on topics such as the mathematics of music, catastrophe theory, molecule and swarm formation and much more.

Jürgen Richter-Gebert is Professor of Geometry and Visualization at the Technical University of Munich. His research focuses on the computer processing of mathematics and the creation of visualization software. He is heavily involved in teaching and science communication and has contributed to numerous exhibitions, for which he was awarded the Ars Legendi Prize in 2011 and the Communicator Prize in 2021.
