In his documentary, the Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei shows the consequences of the refugee crisis and its enormous extent. For this he shot with a dozen different cameramen and numerous film crews in 23 countries. From Iraq, where around four million people are currently on the run, the journey leads to the Greek island of Lesbos, where many African refugees are housed, or to Bangladesh, where almost 250,000 members of the Rohingya Muslim minority have fled Myanmar.
In doing so, Ai also appears in person time and again, helping the people he meets, talking to them or playing with children. But the artist also deals with the causes of the flight, as well as the consequences, which include not only suffering, exploitation and uprooting, but also radicalisation.
