Hamed Abdel-Samad

  • For the love of Germany. What holds us together inside?
  • Lecture

Germany has a tradition of enlightenment – and one of inhumanity. Democracy, freedom of opinion and plurality – it is time to become aware of these values and stand up for them. Hardly anyone knows better than Hamed Abdel-Samad what a high good the liberalism lived in Germany is. For years, however, he has observed a toxic tendency in the public climate to exchange the free, contentious ethics of discourse – the basis of every democratic debate – for a narrow-minded and anti-Enlightenment ethic of opinion.
Abdel-Samad makes clear how precious these achievements are and how little their duration can be taken for granted. In his “Warning Call” he pleads for a clear stance against political Islam.

Hamed Abdel-Samad, born in 1972, is an Egyptian-German political scientist and publicist and a member of the Islam Conference. His bestsellers cause a stir: “Aufklärung durch Tabubruch” (ZDF-Aspekte). Because of his taboo-breaking, a fatwa was issued against him in 2013, and since then he has lived under permanent police protection.
