gAstronomy: Cosmic wafers and astronomical beer

Astronomy is the science of stars, planets and the whole universe. It deals with distant galaxies, the Big Bang, black holes and other things that have nothing to do with our everyday life. But the earth and we ourselves are part of the universe and what happens there affects us too. That is why astronomical phenomena can be found everywhere in our everyday life. You just have to look at the world in the right way. Then you discover the universe everywhere. For example in a glass of beer. Or a waffle.

The beer we drink in the pub in the evening shows us how the earth was formed and tells us about great catastrophes that happened in the past. You find the influence of huge black holes of distant galaxies and the consequences of asteroid impacts. The waffle contains the knowledge about the formation of atoms, the fire of the sun and dying stars. Astronomy is everywhere – not only in space!

Germany’s most successful science blogger, the astronomer and science buster Dr. Florian Freistetter, received his doctorate from the Institute of Astronomy at the University of Vienna and then worked as an astronomer at the observatory of the University of Jena and the Astronomisches Rechen-Institut in Heidelberg.
