Canada – partner in turbulent times

  • Evelyne Coulombe

Following the parliamentary elections in Canada and a change of government in Berlin, new opportunities are emerging for bilateral relations between Canada and Germany. Evelyne Coulombe, Chargé d’Affaires at the Canadian Embassy in Berlin, offers insights into the foundations of this partnership in geopolitically turbulent times.

In 2025, Canada holds the G7 presidency and was a partner country at the Hannover Messe – signs of close cooperation with Germany in supporting Ukraine, international security, energy supply, green hydrogen technology, and the energy transition. Both countries have also deepened their cooperation in areas such as climate protection and migration. Economically, Canada is increasingly turning its gaze toward Europe – partly due to uncertain trade relations with the United States. Agreements such as CETA and the strategic partnership with the EU strengthen collaboration in trade, peace, security, and development. In her talk, Coulombe discusses new opportunities for deepening German-Canadian cooperation and shared goals in the run-up to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta.

Evelyne Coulombe has held various leadership positions at Global Affairs Canada, including as Director for U.S. Cross-Border Affairs. As a Canadian diplomat, she has served in Vietnam, Cambodia, Guatemala, Chile, and Brazil. She is currently Chargé d’Affaires at the Canadian Embassy in Germany.
