- Literature
Daniela Dröscher became famous with her autofictional novel Lies About My Mother, in which she describes how her mother was humiliated because of her fullness, which had a huge impact on her daughter Ela. She is now an adult and struggles with her own body. Or against it? Shortly before graduation, it rebels: neck, heart, skin, everything rebels. At the same time, Ela wonders whether she actually deserves her place in the academic world.
But it’s not just about Ela. Dröscher dissects, highly politically: what is considered healthy, what is considered sick? What space is granted to women’s bodies, what power structures exist in medicine – especially in relation to women?
A novel of development and a story of empowerment – and always ravishingly funny.
Daniela Dröscher made her debut with the novel double biography Die Lichter des George Psalmanazar (2009). This was followed by further novels, a short story collection and a memoir as well as plays, which were performed at the Schauspielhaus Bochum and elsewhere. Lies About My Mother (2024) was made into a film and will be released in 2026.
