From the very beginning, photography has been an important component of war depiction and propaganda. Bertolt Brecht’s War Primer, which inspired the London-based artist duo Broomberg & Chanarin to deal with this topic, presents an examination of violence and terror in the Second World War in image and text. In their work “Warprimer 2”, the duo not only appropriates Brecht’s work, but also his method of montage and re-contextualization of the visual material by replacing his motifs with recent photographs of global conflicts and wars. PD Dr. Grischka Petri talks with the artist duo about, among other things, the complexity of the (contemporary) use and dissemination of images of conflict.

Renowned photographic artists* and scientists* from various disciplines will discuss this in the eight-part international dialogue series “Photography & Science” from 16 January to 2 April 2020. The artistic works form the starting point for a cross-disciplinary questioning of the medium and show the potential of photography to blur both areas.
