Controlled freedom?

  • Guide to digital self-determination
  • Katika Kühnreich
  • Lecture

Katika Kühnreich takes a critical look at the social consequences of digitalization. For a long time now, digitalized surveillance and influence has gone beyond the mere collection and exploitation of data, shaping and controlling our behaviors, our attitudes, and often our political convictions as well. She addresses the drastic changes that smartphones and streaming services have brought to our lives, as well as the gigantic consumption of resources that goes hand in hand with them. She questions trivializing terms such as “cloud”, deals with gamification as well as ubiquitous rating systems.

When knowledge and data are power, there are direct consequences in terms of transparency and privacy. However, there is an alternative to boredom, surveillance and manipulation, because a different digital universe seems possible and there are successful exit as well as strategies of digital self-determination.

Katika Kühnreich is a political scientist and sinologist living in Berlin. One of her research interests is the so-called Social Credit System of the Chinese government. She is a sought-after expert on this topic and works as an author and consultant.
