Class and struggle

  • Christian Baron and Francis Seeck
  • In dialogue

What does it mean to grow up in poverty in a rich country? To belong to the “lower class” and to be laughed at and ostracized for it? To distance oneself from one’s milieu of origin, but not wanting to betray one’s roots? And yet never really arriving in the new milieu?

Germany likes to present itself as a country where class is invisible. In which the opportunities for education and prosperity are the same for everyone. Class and Struggle dispels this myth. In personal essays, 14 authors write about origin and shame, about privilege and structural discrimination, about advancement and discomfort in the new milieu. Together, their voices create a multi-layered manifesto of great political power.

With:
Christian Baron, author, journalist and editor at Der Freitag. He studied political science and German language and literature
Dr. Francis Seeck, cultural anthropologist, gender researcher and professor of sociology at the University of Applied Sciences Neubrandenburg.
