Citizen Habermas

  • Dick Howard

In this lecture, Dick Howard presents his topical paper, “Citizen Habermas”. Howard has himself said of the paper, which was published in 2013, that it is, “probably” the last addition to his short series of published political writings. According to Habermas, the essays, speeches, interviews and book reviews contain, “highly relevant excerpts of the intellectual history of the Federal Republic of Germany.”

Dick Howard will concentrate on the most important steps in the process towards citizen Habermas’ political engagement; the university reform and his relationship with the radical left, the establishment of the Federal Republic of Germany, his attitude towards critical theory and political practice, his return to the University of Frankfurt as well as the founding of the “Berliner Republik” and Habermas’ hopes for this concept.

Dick Howard is Professor Emeritus at Stony Brook University, New York. He is an internationally recognised researcher in the fields of philosophy and political science. He has published work on current events, sociological trends and philosophical issues.
