Because the wounds become birds” – this verse is the title of the 295th issue of the magazine die horen from fall 2024, which is dedicated to current literature from Ukraine. The line of poetry was written by Maksym Kryvtsov, who was only 34 years old – he died at the beginning of last year defending Ukraine against the Russian war of aggression. In their poems, prose texts and essays, all 20 authors speak of war in their own way: sometimes accusatory, sometimes desperate, sometimes soberly descriptive or with dry humor, sometimes full of militant confidence.
In conversation with Christof Hamann, the magazine’s editor, Stefaniya Ptashnyk, a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, Urs Heftrich, Professor of Slavic Literature at the University of Heidelberg, and the Ukrainian writer Halyna Petrosaniak, who lives in Switzerland, will present this edition of horen. As all three also translate, the event will also focus on the joys and struggles of those who deal with ‘translating’ from one language into another, thus making exchange with other worlds possible in the first place.
