  • Digital school uniform?
  • Geist Heidelberg, Lecture

Should smartphones be banned at school? Initial studies show that a smartphone ban can improve students’ learning performance and reduce problems such as cyberbullying. Should students as a whole be given equal access to digitally relevant learning environments – a digital school uniform, so to speak? This presentation will highlight the common arguments for and against banning smartphones in schools, as well as current research on the relationship between smartphone use and academic achievement. In addition, the role of generative artificial intelligence such as ChatGPT will also be discussed with the emerging opportunities and threats.

Dr. Christian Montag is a professor of molecular psychology at the University of Ulm. His research focuses on biological foundations of personality and areas of neuroeconomics and psychoinformatics. In addition, he explores the question of how digitalization affects people and society.
