Can AI create consciousness?

  • Why you can't calculate consciousness
  • Christof Koch
  • Geist Heidelberg, Lecture

Consciousness – the feeling of being alive – is defined by Christof Koch as conscious experience, from the most mundane to the most extraordinary.
But how can the brain produce subjective experience? In theory, consciousness is much more widespread than commonly thought, for example in animals. Could artificial intelligence also develop consciousness?

Christof Koch argues that programmable computers will not have consciousness. Even a perfect software model of the brain is not conscious; it merely simulates consciousness.
Consciousness is not a computational process – it is not a clever hack. Consciousness is being.

The neurophysiologist and neuroscientist Prof. Dr. Christof Koch received his PhD from the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Tübingen, was a professor at the California Institute of Technology until 2013, and is now director at the Allen Institute for Brain Science in Seattle.
