  • The border as crisis, the crisis as border
  • Europe's handling of refugees during the Corona pandemic

How does the corona pandemic affect the ongoing debate on how to deal with flight and migration in Europe?
One of the most important arguments for the implementation of corona measures was solidarity and vulnerability, appealing to the sense of community of the population. But what does this appeal mean for people on the run?

Where are the limits of the crisis, and when will the crisis become a limit?

This question will be examined on the basis of the political and civil society reactions to the situation of the more than 40,000 refugees on the Greek islands during the pandemic.

Bilgin Ayata is a migration researcher and professor of political sociology at the University of Basel.
