- Education or digitial dementia?
- Knowledge or information?
- Geist Heidelberg, In dialogue
In “Digital Dementia”, Manfred Spitzer describes the gradual decline in our ability to learn and remember, a process which can be put down to our growing use of digital media in the learning process. According to Spitzer, our regular use of instantly available information means we no longer use our brains in the same way. This does long-term damage to our bodies and, above all, to our intellect. Are we therefore increasing our own chances of succumbing to so-called, “digital dementia”?
Professor Manfred Spitzer is the Medical director of the psychiatrics at the University clinic in Ulm. He also heads the TransferZentrum für Neurowissenschaften und Lernen (ZNL) at the University of Ulm, which he founded in 2004 and which deals primarily with Neurodidactics.
Dr Manfred Osten is an art historian and former diplomat. After 30 years working in the diplomatic service, he served as the general secretary for the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung from 1995 – 2003. Osten also works as an author and journalist and has published numerous cultural works.
