Samson is to investigate a murder together with the obscure secret policeman Abyazov. No people were killed, but animals – which is a crime, because the trade in meat is forbidden. Samson begins to investigate. But then his girlfriend Nadezhda is kidnapped by striking railroad workers. With the help of Abyazov, his colleague Cholodny and some Red Army soldiers, Samson tries to free Nadyzhda, but the new case will severely test his sense of justice.

Andrei Kurkov, born in St. Petersburg in 1961, has lived in Kiev since childhood and writes in Russian. He is considered one of the most important contemporary authors in Ukraine. His works, mainly novels and screenplays, are published in 42 languages. Kurkov repeatedly sheds light on the situation in Ukraine, commenting, for example, that Putin is “destroying not only Ukraine, but also Russia and the Russian language.” (taz)
