4×4 women’s choir. Garfinkel. Barley. Festival campus

Stadthalle Heidelberg

  • Bring me a Dream
  • USA Day
  • Concert, Literature

Bring Me a Dream is the name of the cheerful, thoughtful and visionary program by the award-winning women’s choir 4×4 from the Heidelberg University of Education – and opens an afternoon that is divided into three very different, interlinked parts.
[Länge: ca. 30 min]

Freedom and Its Discontents: An American Reckoning will be followed by a performative reading by Canadian playwright and author Jonathan Garfinkel. In his work, he juxtaposes the American promise of freedom with the experiences, ruptures and struggles of marginalized voices from the past to the present. Starting from the Constitution of the United States as an idealistic promise, an arc of famous literary texts and political speeches unfolds, revealing the fragility of democratic orders.
[Sprache: Englisch; Länge: ca. 45 min]

For the third part of the afternoon, the Festivalcampus ensemble and improvisation artist Matthew Barley will prepare their own version of “In C”, the pioneering masterpiece of minimal music in which the composer Terry Riley created a fascinating and intuitively comprehensible musical model of democratic co-determination in 1964.
[Länge: ca. 45 min]

The event is part of USA Day: to mark the 250th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence, the DAI Heidelberg – which celebrates its 80th anniversary in 2026 – is joining forces with the Heidelberger Frühling to take a reflective look at the United States. Under the title “The Other 50%”, words and sounds complement each other in an exciting reflection on the ideals and realities of a country whose politics and culture have always been an indispensable landmark since 1945, especially when viewed from Germany.
