Day 5 – International Children’s Book Festival – Wednesday, 26 October
With Day Five of the International Children’s Book Festival, we have already reached the halfway point of our program. Today it’s going to be wild, because at the DAI the animals are on the loose! Whether it’s our Chinese program with a focus on the tiger or the visit of the Rhein-Neckar Lions – it’s going to be beastly good.
More information about the individual programs can be found by clicking on the title.

13:00 – Stop the thief!
Today is Michaelmas Day! The marketplace in the city is full of people. In the middle of it all: Anna and her brother Lukas. Their father, master tailor Lautensack, has sent them to get new velvet from cloth merchant Brandis as quickly as possible. But the hustle and bustle at the big market is far too exciting. What is there not to see! Above all, the children have to watch the fire-eater. And so they don’t even notice that a bag cutter is hot on their heels …
The exhibition makes the book Haltet den Dieb (2022) by Stefanie Bölke and Markus Lefrançois readable and tangible as a “walk-in book” and provides insights into the process of creating books by exhibiting original sketches and drawings by artist Markus Lefrançois. A journey into the Middle Ages that will delight young and old alike.
The exhibition can be visited during the festival during the week daily between 13:00 and 18:00. On weekends from 11:00 – 18:00.
The program is free of charge. Donations are requested to cover expenses.
Registration is not necessary.

14:00 – Picture book cinema
Experiencing books in a new way – this is also a concern of the International Children’s Book Festival. As beautiful as it is to hold a book in one’s hands and to grasp it with all the senses, the new media in particular offer undreamt-of possibilities – specifically for us in the sense of picture book cinema. Here, pictures of a book are projected onto a screen; at the same time, they are accompanied by the text and appropriate sounds. Picture book cinema not only provides good entertainment for children, it also supports learning to read and write by highlighting individual words.
Our picture book cinema screenings consist of a picture book followed by a thematically appropriate children’s non-fiction book. Lights out – movie on!
The program is free of charge. A donation is requested to cover expenses.
Registration is not necessary.

15:00 – Year of the Tiger: Wang Min & Lihong
China possesses a vast treasure of fairy tales, myths and legends. They carry the spiritual roots of the people of this huge country and offer extremely interesting insights into China’s patterns of thought and action. From this treasure, the tiger will receive special attention in this event. In the form of stories and calligraphy, by means of Taijiquan and handicrafts we will celebrate the Year of the Tiger in many different ways.
Wang Min holds a PhD in German studies and is the author of the story collections The White Snake (2019) and The Beautiful Vixen (2021). He lives in Hamburg, Germany.
